Building A More Meaningful Life

In early 2011, Tom Schwieterman was planning a summer vacation, looking for a better alternative to a dog kennel for boarding his dog. He came across Snaggle Foot, and was impressed with the concept, so he emailed the franchisor and began a conversation. Within a few short months, he was a franchisee!

“I’m basically in my 10th year of Snaggle Foot ownership and I love it,” Tom said.

Tom’s franchise, in Powell, Ohio, has benefitted from his background in banking and retail management. “The hours in retail are terrible, I was really unhappy. So when I found this opportunity, I jumped at it. It’s been great, and I really enjoy it.”

“My background was on the customer service side of things, so I learned how to talk with people, how to read people, how to listen – all of these skills prepared me for success with Snaggle Foot. This is a business where you get to know the customer and their pet, which is like family to them. In fact, over the past decade I’ve become very close with some of our customers and their pets.” Tom attended Ohio State University and earned his degree in Operations Management. “I can’t imagine starting a business without a solid understanding of financials. If you only love animals, but aren’t good at figures, then you’ll have an extra challenge to overcome. It’s important to have a set of business skills that allow you to manage the franchise profitably.” Tom’s business employs independent contractors, one has been with him for six years! In the beginning, his daughters would help out, and even his wife would do some visits. The biggest challenge to the business is finding good staff, according to Tom. “Finding someone reliable and trustworthy. That’s the most important thing. I am always looking for people that I’ve known for a while, that I know I can trust, who want to work with animals. Typically I find people through word-of-mouth. If I get a personal referral, my confidence level is stronger, and it’s more likely to work out.” Tom estimates he spends about 80% of his time out of the office actually doing visits. “I’ve learned how to streamline the office work, so I can be out doing what I love,” explains Tom.

90% of Tom’s business consists of single family residential pet owners, with a couple of assisted living facilities nearby that he serves. Most customers are families with kids in school and parents who work in an office or school. “Now more people are at home, but with kids in hybrid-learning, or teachers trying to teach from home, we are still busy.”

A majority of Tom’s business consists of dog visits/walks. “80% of my business is dog walking or dog visits. The other 20% is mostly cat visits. It was a little scary when I first started. My wife thought I was crazy in the beginning! But we’ve both been surprised by just how much business there is. Our busiest time of the year is Spring Break; March is the busiest month for us. I expected it would the Holiday season, but it’s Spring Break, by far.”

2020 has been a challenge, but Tom is thankful his business was well-established prior to Covid. “Fortunately, I was able to put away enough to carry the business through this difficult time. Even though we are still not through it, I know that my customers have not gone away. I have enough to stay busy, and I know the rest of them will come back once they are able to return to work.”

“This is not a business for someone who doesn’t want to work weekends or evenings. When I worked in retail, I hated working weekends and evenings, but now with this business, I love it. You come to love the dogs. And then the people you work for, they become friends.”

Tom has some advice for people thinking about becoming a Snaggle Foot franchisee. “The first couple of years you really have to work hard to get the word out, but once you get going things start to pick up and people start referring you. One time, I actually had a woman call me from her car when we were sitting at a stop light. She was right behind me and called because of my car wrap!”

“If you’ve got a love for animals, and a good eye for business, this is the perfect job for you. The Snaggle Foot training is great. The support is there for you. It’s an easy transition. You learn the systems, and just go out and start getting clients.”
